Volkswagen Canada has officially shown the second-generation Atlas, and the 2027 model will reach Grande Prairie Volkswagen as part of its Canadian launch later this fall. Unveiled on March 31, 2026 ahead of the New York International Auto Show, the redesigned Atlas keeps the spacious three-row layout that families have relied on while adding sharper exterior design, an upgraded turbocharged engine, and a more thoroughly equipped cabin. Drivers across the Peace Region -- where long highway trips, gravel approaches, and four real seasons are part of everyday life -- will find a longer list of standard features this year, including a power tailgate, dual Qi2 wireless charging, rear sunshades, and front and rear Park Distance Control. Volkswagen has confirmed that final Canadian specifications and pricing will be released closer to the launch.
The redesigned Atlas takes on a stronger, more polished face. Double-stacked LED headlights flank a masked upper grille, paired with a powerful hood line that gives the SUV a planted look. Every trim above the base level adds double lightlines and an illuminated VW badge, making the front end recognizable at any time of day. Standard dynamic turn signals offer three different animation patterns -- a small detail Grande Prairie drivers will notice every time they signal a turn off Highway 43.
In side view, the proportions feel cleaner thanks to a redesigned theme line, sculpted side sills, and stronger fenders. Wheel sizes range from 18 inches up to 21 inches, with both machined alloy and gloss black finishes available. The rear has a more pronounced spoiler and a tailgate that now sits flush against the bumper for a more modern shape. A cross-body taillight signature mirrors the front lighting design. Available illuminated door handles and puddle lamps with a unique projection pattern add character. Three additions to the colour palette this year include Blackberry, Boreal Green, and Ascot Grey.
Inside, the cabin has been completely rebuilt around a wraparound architectural loop that runs through the dashboard and into the front door panels. Vents, displays, and lighting follow that single line for a calm, organized look. The shift lever has moved up to the steering column, which freed up the centre console for storage, two-phone wireless charging, and the new Driver Experience Dial. Real wood décor is included on every Atlas trim, joined by soft-touch surfaces, contrasting stitching, and a choice of three palettes -- light Mistral, classic Soul Black, or the all-new Garnet Red.
Comfort gains run throughout the cabin. The standard 12-way ergonomic driver's seat has been revised with stronger four-way lumbar support. Upper trims add thigh support, and four-way massage is available on both front seats. Captain's chairs and a panoramic sunroof remain available on the top two trims. The third row keeps its easy-access function -- second-row seats tilt and slide forward even with LATCH child seats secured -- making weekend trips with kids and gear simpler. New B-pillar vents bring conditioned air to the rear cabin, and second-row seat ventilation is offered on upper trims. For Grande Prairie winters, that combination of standard heated equipment and ventilation gives families flexibility year-round.
Power comes from the new EA888 evo5 turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder, rated at 282 horsepower. That figure is up 13 hp over the outgoing engine and is the highest output ever fitted to a production Atlas. Volkswagen anticipates better fuel economy than the previous generation, with official L/100 km figures to be released ahead of the launch. Towing capacity stays at 5,000 lbs (2,268 kg), and payload capacity carries over from the outgoing Atlas.
An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard, and Volkswagen's 4MOTION all-wheel drive is included on every trim -- a real consideration for Peace Region drivers who deal with snow-covered Highway 2, gravel roads to job sites, and shoulder-season ice. The redesigned Atlas rides on the upgraded MQB evo platform, which preserves the model's third-row room while supporting the new powertrain. Overall length is slightly increased over the current Atlas, while height, width, and wheelbase remain the same.
A free-standing infotainment screen anchors the dashboard. The base trim uses a 12.9-inch display, while every other trim moves up to a 15-inch screen. The 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro configurable instrument cluster is standard across the lineup. A new Driver Experience Dial in the centre console handles audio volume, drive modes, and -- on upper trims -- the Atmospheres feature that synchronizes lighting and audio. The console fits two phones side by side using updated Qi2 wireless charging, with up to seven USB-C ports placed throughout the cabin. The base trim adds a 9-speaker audio system, and the top two trims offer an available 14-speaker Harman Kardon premium setup.
Safety has expanded with the addition of a front centre airbag, raising total airbag count to seven. The IQ.DRIVE driver assistance suite has been refined as well. Travel Assist now allows for driver-initiated lane changes between 0 and 150 km/h while the driver keeps hands on the wheel. Front and rear Park Distance Control is now standard on every trim, including the base model. The latest Park Assist Plus is added to the top trim, which helps when slotting into tight angled parking around downtown Grande Prairie.
The 2027 Atlas continues with multiple Canadian trims, all sharing the EA888 evo5 turbocharged engine, eight-speed automatic transmission, and standard 4MOTION all-wheel drive.
